Converting to Macs.
Really, I’m doing this post because of a cartoon I did for my other site. This debate occurs from time to time. One of our users will insist that we should be looking into converting completely over to Macs. Even if we could afford to do so, it probably would not be practical. PCs work best with Windows servers and for now, Windows makes the better server. One user here has pushed and pushed and loves to argue the virtues of Macs. What is funny though, when I asked him what he ran at home, he admitted he does not have a single Mac at home yet.
I agree that they are good machines but there are many factors, mostly due to costs. Hands done the best article I have seen on the debate has to be on Chris Green’s site you can read the article here. It is extremely fair and balanced, unlike Fox news. I highly recommend it.
It would be nice to have them at times for sure. I have to say though since we started locking out users from being Admins on their own PCs, we have almost zero issues with spyware. I cannot remember the last time we had a ‘bluescreen of death’ or any sort of infection. Yes, we have to stay on top of everything but computers are just that way. Even Macs need some work done from time to time. Some day I would love to have a Mac to do my art, if you can call it that. But for now I’ll just plug along, saving money.
For the record, we have 2 Mac PCs and a Mac server. I do see their value when the need is there. Of course this is for our Communications department.
